HYC members stage 12 hrs sit-in demonstration

SHILLONG, Dec 30: Members of the Hynniewtrep tiol Council (HYC), Raid Nongtung Circle today staged a 12 hours sit-in-demonstration at U Soso Tham auditorium in protest over the allege oppression by the Assam government and the iction of the Meghalaya government in rectifying their problems.

Speaking to reporters, Hercules Suting president HYC Nongtung Circle said, “We have taken this decision to stage a protest here today is due to the fact that even after attaining statehood the people of the region are being oppressed and domited by the Assam government and also till date there is no proper border alignment between the two states.”

He added, “Even on December 19, at Tyrso there was an indiscrimite use of force by the Assam police numbering around 15 personnel as they dismantled the Community Hall (Dorbar) which was constructed through the scheme sanctioned by the Meghalaya government along with threats to jail the construction if they continue their work.”

Informing that there is a constant demand for ransom from militants located in the area, he said, if the Meghalaya does not have time to turn its attention in safeguarding the people of the state especially in Block 2 region then they want to request the state government to supply them military weapons so that they can fight their own battle.

In this connection, he said the Council had informed the matter to Mawlasi police in which they had assured them that the matter will be taken up seriously. He said the Council had earlier met the then Home Minister Roshan Warjri apprising her on their grievances and had also requested her to upgrade the Police outpost located at Mawlasi into a full-fledged police stations and to relocate it to Madan Umwang village. However, till date nothing has been done.
