Illegal Immigration Still Cause of Concern: Conrad Sangma

Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is of the view that influx and illegal immigration will be an issue in the coming years.

Speaking to media persons in Shillong on Friday, 18 hours after being given a hero’s welcome at the Lokpriya Bordoloi Airport, Guwahati, Conrad Sangma firstly said the opposition to the CAB is a collective effort of the political parties, NGOs and religious groups. Conrad seems to be negating the reported claims made by State Congress leader Mukul Sangma that it was the Congress party that led from the front in the anti-CAB movement.

Stating that he doesn’t to make a political issue out of it, the Meghalya Chief Minister categorically stated that influx and illegal immigration is still a cause of concern in the State and the region.

“I agree with you that influx and illegal immigration is an issue and has been an issue and will be an issue in the coming years also. That is one of the reasons why the sentiments for the CAB were so strong. It is because everybody is concerned about illegal immigration,” Conrad Sangma stated.

With the growing demands for the implementation of the ILP in the State, Conrad gave a diplomatic reply. He said, “Our government is definitely open to explore all possible ideas to balance out a mechanism that is going to ensure illegal immigration doesn’t take place but at same time ensure that the economy is also not affected whether it is tourism or any kind of investment that is there”

Further pushed on his government push to implement and execute the entry-exit points within the State to check movement of illegal immigrants, the Chief Minister said things will be put in place in the next few months. “Already advance steps have been taken. We should be opening up the entry-exit points very soon and we have finalized the locations for the points in almost all the key areas where we find maximum traffic and hopefully in the next four months will be able to start the work at these points in East Jaintia Hills, Ri Bhoi, West Khasi Hills, North Garo Hills, West Garo Hills”stated Conrad Sangma.
