GUWAHATI, Dec 14: The Sadou Asom Jatiya Swahid Pariyal Samanwayrakkhi Parishad has stated that Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia provided to the families of martyrs of Assam Agitation by the present BJP-led government in Assam is not its only responsibility towards the martyrs who gave up their lives for a great cause. The State government should rather implement the Assam Accord, which was the outcome of the Assam Agitation, in letter and spirit.

Addressing a press conference held on Wednesday, Parishad president Hemanta Kumar th and general secretary Manik Chandra Debth jointly said, “31 years have passed since the signing of the historic Assam Accord and 855 persons gave up their lives during the Assam Agitation, but nothing has been done by successive governments at the State and the Centre for implementation of the Accord all those years. If necessary, we will return the Rs 5 lakh compensation to the government, but we will not compromise with implementation of the Assam Accord.”

“Any conspiracy to grant citizenship to Hindus or Muslims who came to Assam after 1971 will not be tolerated by the families of martyrs,” said th and Debth.

The NDA government at the Centre is mulling amendment of the Citizenship Act so that minority people from Bangladesh, who had entered India without valid documents, could be granted citizenship.

The Parishad also expressed serious displeasure over the non-announcement of any compensation by the State government in the December 10 Sraddhanjali programme held here for the persons who were maimed due to extreme torture, bullet injuries and other causes during Assam Agitation.

“It’s really unfortute that members of around 890 families of martyrs and those who were maimed during the Agitation days are yet to be given government jobs. During the rule of the last Congress government, only 4 members of martyrs’ families were given government jobs. Earlier, during the AGP days, 519 members of martyrs’ families were given government jobs and Rs 30,000 was given to members of each of the martyrs’ families. Around 890 members of martyrs’ families are yet to get government jobs. The present government in the State should give jobs to them within January 26 next,” it added.

The Parishad also demanded that those who were maimed or tortured during Assam Agitation be given Rs 2 lakh as compensation by the State government.
