India Open Boxing: Argentina, Thailand land in Guwahati

Mary Kom arrives early to accustom with the condition

GUWAHATI: With just two days to go for the second edition of the Indian Open visitors are started to arrive in the city to participate in the competition. Thailand and Argentina are the two teams who arrived today and rest of the countries are expected to reach the city tomorrow.

Meanwhile top attraction and six-time world champion Mary Kom also arrived in the city early to train and acclimatize as she sets her sights on the 51kg gold. A gold medallist in 48kg at India Open 2018, Mary spent Saturday afternoon honing her skills at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) complex here in the city.

Talking to the media Mary said, “I have been training well and will give my hundred percent to make my country proud.”

This time she will fight in new weight category. “A change is always good and I feel more confident in 51kg after the last few months of rigorous training”, said Mary.

She also added: Guwahati is like my second home and always feels a home coming whenever I reach in the city. I hope there will be tremendous support for all the Indian boxers during the competition.”

With a few months to go for the World Championships, which is also an Olympic qualifier, the India Open will serve as the preparatory ground for all the participants. Indian team for the forthcoming World championship would also be selected from this competition. It may be mentioned here that altogether six boxers from Assam will be the part of the Indian team which will participate in the India Open that will kick off on Monday.
