India Open Boxing Championship: Jamuna Boro From Assam Clinches Gold

Assam's Jamuna Boro today (Friday) won the gold in the 54kg category at the India Open Boxing Championship in Guwahati. Jamuna Boro defeated Y Sandhyarani in the final by 5-0.

It is the first time Guwahati is hosting this mega international Boxing tournament.

This was the fifth occasions when the boxer from Assam meets Meena Kumari in the ring and finally, Jamuna Boro succeeded to beat the opponent. Just after the semifinal bout in 54 kg category, Jamuna looked very emotional and even seen tears her eyes when the result was declared.

Talking to the media persons Jamuna today admitted that she was a little bit emotional after the bout. “Earlier I have faced the boxers four times and every occasion I was the loser. Even in the last India Open, I was beaten. So it was like a revenge match for me. This time I was well prepared and also cautious. Although presence of my family members at the gallery put little pressure on me I managed to hold my nerve and able beat her.”

The boxers also said that after the victory she was now eying a gold in the championship. “Yes, my target is the Gold and I will try my best tomorrow. This is the first occasion when I am playing an international tournament at home and will try to convert it a memorable one.”

Meanwhile Mary Kom today lashed out at her opponent Nikhat after her semifinal bout. In a conversation with the media, she said, “I read in a newspaper that she was challenging me. I have nothing to prove. If I am her idol, then she has to show respect to me,” said Mary.
