India take on Maldives in women's football

Shillong, Feb 4: The 12th South Asian Games 2016 is all set to kick off in Shillong with women’s football opening proceedings on February 5 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex. Of the eight competing tions, five are participating for the women’s football event including defending champions and hosts India, neighbouring Bangladesh and Pakistan, Maldives and Sri Lanka. The hosts will face Maldives in the second match tomorrow.

At a press conference held in Shillong on Thursday, India’s coach Sajid Dar and captain Oim Bembem Devi expressed their confidence in retaining the title for a second consecutive Games but admitted that team India will not be taking the competition lightly.

Coach Dar stated “We’re the defending champions so all eyes will be on us and expectations will turally be high. Our team is looking to start off well with Maldives and we’re hoping to get the best result against them,” while India’s skipper Bembem said that they have been working hard for the last two weeks and will try to defend the title. “I will do my level best along with the team,” she added.
