GUWAHATI, July 21: The Government Railway Police (GRP), Guwahati railway station with the help of IC Dinesh Medhi, GRP, Kamakhya railway station arrested a couple identified as Pinki Sarkar (30) and Manik Sarkar (32) from Loko Colony, Pandu on Saturday allegedly for kidnapping a two-month old baby girl. During the search operation, the GRP also rescued the infant from their possession.

According to GRP sources, a woman identified as Mridula Devi was about to board on a train on July 3 at Guwahati railway station taking along her twin babies. She was about to travel to her native place, Roha near Nogaon. Falling between the rushes in front of the coach, Mridula requested Manik to take a baby as she was getting trouble to get into the coach. Notably, accused Manik was standing just besides Mridula. As soon as the baby was handed over, Manik went out of sight from the platform.

Notably, Mridula’s husband, who is a hawker at Guwahati railway station itself, was undergoing treatment in a city hospital on that day. Hence, getting no one to take help right on the moment, she approached the GRP and a case (No 180/18 u/s 363 IPC) was registered on July 3 following which the GRP started investigation and the duo were arrested today.

Accused Manik and his wife Pinki, who was also arrested, confessed and said that they have been suffering from infertility for years for which they committed the crime. On the other hand, Mridula informed the GRP team that the accused duo had been their neighbours earlier at a rent house near Kamakhya Gate, Maligaon.

Notably, along with this case, the GRP has rescued as many as 62 children till date in 2018.
