Initiatives taken to enhance quality of voting experience for the Lok Sabha elections

Silchar: For the Lok Sabha elections 2019, The Cachar district administration, following the instructions of the State Election Commission has taken various initiatives to enhance the quality of voting experience for the esteemed electors, more particularly the special categories of voters in terms of ease, comfort and facilitation.

As a part of the initiative, Sishu Sarathi, a Guwahati based NGO has been roped in by the District Election Office and an awareness meeting was conducted on Friday at the District Library. The Sector Officers, BLOs and other officials of Cachar Karimganj and Hailakandi took part in the meeting.

Cachar DC Laya Madduri attended the awareness meeting today and spoke on the occasion. She requested all BLOs and sector officers to assist in identifying PWD (persons with disabilities) voters and sensitising polling personnel in facilitating them during voting. The emphasis was laid on acclimatising the specially abled voters with the various facilities available so that they can cast their votes in a hastle free manner. The specially abled voters will have separate seating and waiting arrangments, and as per ECI rules, they should be given priority at the queue on poll day. On behalf of the NGO, Saswati Saikia delivered a detailed account of the methods to deal with the specially abled persons. ADC AR Majumder delivered the welcome address, Election Officer Sudip Nath also spoke on the occasion.

It may be mentioned that, as per the ECI guidelines, State level and District Level committees should be constituted for the purpose of accessible and inclusive electoral process with regard to persons with disabilities, polling station wise database of PwDs should be prepared with support from Department of Disabilities/Social Welfare/Hospitals or CMO’s office through BLOs, single window for the PwDs could also be explored during polling.
