Invitatiol Golf Championship kicks off at Digboi Golf Links

DIGBOI, Feb 17: The much awaited 39th edition of All Assam Amateur Invitatiol Golf Championship (AAAIGC) took off at here at the British built air –striped historic golf Links here this morning at Digboi in Tinsukia District of Upper Assam. The three-day meet at the only 18 hole golf course in Upper Assam here in Digboi with a par of 72 and yardage of 6309 for gents and 5242 for ladies is expected to witness a fine display of skills and strife in various categories among the golfers.

Organised under the aegis of Upper Assam Golf Association (UAGA) being sponsored by Indian Oil Corporation Assam Oil Division with The Sentinel as the Media Partner to promote the golfing cause across the State, this  prestigious golf tourment was iugurated by Mritunjoy Pramanik, the Executive Director IndianOil (Assam Oil Division) in presence of Vivek Seth President UAGA, Siddhartha Chaliha Gen Secretary UAGA, A K Bhagawati DGM IC HR and Organizing Secretary, Tasdeeq, Tridiv Hazarika UAGA officials, Mridul Shyam Golf Captain Digboi Golf Links, golfers and executives from IOCL(AOD) and tea industry of upper Assam. Pramanik also carried out the ceremonial tee off besides releasing the electronic version of the souvenir printed to commemorate this event.

Addressing the significant gathering, Pramanik who was the chief guest on the iugural ceremony, welcomed all the golfers from different corners of the country and also highlighted the tural landscape and topography of the Golf Course. He  described the picturesque of  Digboi Golf Links, situated adjacent to the Upper Dehing reserve forest, as the only 18 hole golf course in Upper Assam with a par of 72 and yardage of 6309 for gents and 5242 for ladies. It may be added here that the course is undulating with a fair sprinkling of tural hazards. Deer, tigers elephants, leopards and a wide variety of flora and fau can be spotted on the course, which also boasts of scenic views of the Patkai Hills. Pramanik also lauded the efforts of the UAGA for organizing the C’ship constantly attracting the Golfers across and promoting the cause of the golfers.

Meanwhile, the three days of the significant sporting event has attracted close to 140 golfers from the various belts of the North Eastern states of India. Players from varied professions and age groups have gathered in Digboi to showcase their golfing skills. The oldest player on the field R N Chakravarty who is just 83 while the youngest golfer Master Dion Pao a seven years old dashing and ambitious amateur have been all gearing up to exhibit their skills in their respective categories.

However, the first day of play had fourballs among the ladies and higher handicap players.

The first day event witnessed some exceptiol golfing skills as the players also vied for skill prize like closes to pin, straight drive and longest drive. Qualifiers from   maiden day’s play along with the ladies would be playing tomorrow.

The 39th edition of this popular golf tourment which features among the longest running golf tourments of India and supported by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (Assam Oil Division) would conclude on the 19th next.
