INX Media case: Enforcement Directorate seizes assets of Karti Chidambaram worth Rs 54 Cr in India, abroad

The Enforcement Directorate said on Thursday it has attached assets worth Rs 54 crore of former Union finance minister P Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram in India, the UK and Spain concerning the INX Media money laundering case.

ED issued a provisional order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA) for the attachment of Karti Chidambaram's Indian assets in Kodaikanal and Ooty in Tamil Nadu and a flat in New Delhi’s Jorbagh.

The central probe agency also said that a cottage and house in Somerset worth of Rs. 8.67 crore in the United Kingdom and a tennis club worth Rs. 14 crore located in Barcelona, Spain have also been attached under the same order.

The other assets attached by ED comprise two bungalow s in Tamil Nadu's Ooty that are worth Rs. 50 lakh and Rs. 3.75 crore respectively and an agricultural land valued Rs. 25 lakh in Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu, an agency official said.

ED have also attached fixed Deposits worth Rs. 90 lakh in a bank in Chennai, in the name of Advantage Strategic Consulting Private Limited (ASCPL).

As said by an official of the Enforce Directorate, "We have attached six properties of Karti worth Rs. 54 crore."

Karti Chidambaram, the son of veteran Congress leader and former union minister P Chidambaram, has been accused of getting government clearance for foreign investment in exchange for bribes to the tune of around Rs. 300 crore for INX Media . Investigators have the opinion that Karti used the influence of his father who was

Finance Minister at that time under the UPA regime.

Moreover, the ED also attached properties belonging to Peter and Indrani Mukerjea regarding the same case INX Media.

Karti Chidambaram in connection with these attachments tweeted, "A bizarre and outlandish ”Provisional Attachment Order” which is not based on law or facts but on crazy conjectures. This is meant only to grab ”headlines”. The ”order” will not withstand judicial scrutiny, review or appeal. Will approach the appropriate legal

forum."
