Iron Lady Irom Sharmila Gives Birth To Twins on Mother’s Day

Guwahati: Political Activist and poet from Manipur Irom Sharmila gave birth to twin girls on Sunday, May 12 which was celebrated as the Mother’s Day at a private hospital in Malleswaram.

The delivery happened through C-section and the babies were born a minute apart in the 35th week of pregnancy. Hospital authorities said that both the mother and the babies are in good health.

Iron Lady Irom Sharmila and her British husband Desmond Coutinho named their twins as Nix Shakhi and Autumn Tara. Sharmila was treated by obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. Sripada Vinekar. Dr. Venkar from Cloudnine Group of Hospitals said that both the babies and mother are doing extremely well. The doctor said that it was a coincidence that she gave birth twins on Mother’s Day. The doctor also stated that they were expecting her to deliver next week but she suddenly came it with labour pain and therefore they have to go for C-section delivery of Sharmila. “It was an overwhelming experience for me to have delivered her babies. She is a strong and a very humble lady,” Dr. Vinekar said.

The Iron lady Sharmila is known to have been on the longest hunger strike of 16 years from 2000 in protest against India imposing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Manipur. Sharmila vowed to fast until AFSPA was repealed and ended it in 2016 after the Supreme Court judgement questioning the immunity enjoyed by security personnel.

It has been reported that the babies weighed 2.16 kg and 2.15 kg respectively at the time of birth. Expressing happiness, the activist said that this is a new life, a new beginning for her and that she is very happy. She said that neither Desmond nor she had any preference but they wanted healthy children adding that her happiness doubled on realizing that she gave birth to the twins on Mother’s Day.
