IT department employee caught red-handed taking bribe

LAKHIMPUR, July 4: A casual employee of the Income Tax department in Lakhimpur was caught red-handed on Wednesday when she was taking cash as bribe for granting an Income Tax Remittance certificate to a person. As per report from DSP Rashmi Rekha Sarmah, the casual employee of the IT office of Lakhimpur was identified as Rupali Das alias Janmoni Bhuyan Sarmah, staying at Nowboicha of the district. “She was caught red-handed when she was taking an amount of Rs. 5,000 from Tanmoy Dutta during a raid by a team of the Anti-Corruption Bureau from Guwahati and a team of Lakhimpur Police. She was shifted to Guwahati by the Anti-Corruption Bureau. The raid was launched as per a complaint filed by Tanmoy Dutta, the Assistant Manager of AEBCL under TNT division located at Nolkota,” DSP Rashmi Rekha Sarmah told The Sentinel.

The arrested employee allegedly demanded Tanmoy Dutta a total amount of Rs 10,000 on June 26 for the clearance of the certificates from the Tezpur IT Office. Dutta approached her seeking the certificate for one of his friends. He paid Rs 5,000 to her on Wednesday as first instalment of the amount after he informed the matter to Lakhimpur Superintendent of Police, Sudhakar Singh filing a complaint. DSP Rashmi Rekha, who led the team of Lakhimpur Police in the operation, informed that the cash amount and some documents were seized from the arrested employee who demanded the bribe under the fake name Janmoni Bhuyan Sarmah.
