It's all doom and gloom for AGP

GUWAHATI, March 17: The revival of the AGP, it seems, is all doom and gloom.   

As though a bombshell was dropped on the party on March 13 when former Chief Minister and party’s founder president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta dashed off a letter to party president Atul Bora stating that in July 2014 he had relieved himself of the post of party president on health ground, handing over the charge to the latter. With Mahanta recovering well, the letter said, Bora should hand him over the post within 15 days. This, the letter said, is a must since Mahanta is an elected president of the regiol party.

Riding of the decision taken at the last General House meeting in last part of 2014, according to sources, Atul Bora is reluctant to quit his post.

Talking to newsmen in the New Delhi today, Bora said: “He will act in accordance with the decisions taken at the last General House meeting of the party in last part of 2014.”

Mahanta, on the other hand, said today: “A party has to be run in accordance with its constitution. I was on sick leave. Since I have recovered fully now, I should be given the post back in accordance with the party constitution.”

The party fared badly in the last Lok Sabha and municipal board elections in the state. Ahead of the 2016 Assembly elections in the state, the party is heading for yet another tug of war for the post of its president. It seems that various organizations and intellectuals of the state could try to revive the AGP till its doomsday, but the party leaders are hellbent that it will not get rid of its power-hungry politics.
