It’s Outcome of Allies Combined Hard Work In State, Says Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: NEDA (North East Democratic Alliance) convener Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is also State Finance Minister, has said that by the sweat of their brow the BJP-AGP-BPF combine has achieved this result in the Lok Sabha poll. Support from Rabhas, Tiwas and the Sanmilita Gana Shakti in the State has also helped shape the outcome, he said.

Talking to the media on Thursday, Himanta Biswa Sarma said: “The Lok Sabha poll outcome in Assam is not that of the BJP alone. Since we’ve worked together with the AGP and the BPF, the seats we’ve won are better said as that of the NDA. It’s collective results of collective efforts.”

According to Sarma, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s politics of development has found takers among the people. “People want development. What our government did in Assam for the minorities in the past three years, the Congress couldn’t over the years. For us the Karimganj seat is a hard-fought wan. We’ve defeated the nearest rival AIUDF candidate by a margin of around 17,000 votes,” he said.

Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill has been rejected as an issue even as the Opposition took it to the voters. “While some people wrote articles on the Bill, former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta abstained from voting against the Bill. For former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi the Bill was a buzzword. However, people simply rejected it as an issue. The more the Opposition will talk on the Bill, the more the BJP will get people’s support,” he said.
