Jadavpur University professor divested for offensive remark on girls

Guwahati: A professor of Jadavpur University has recently come into new for his controversial comment on the social media wherein he has made offensive remarks on girls. The professor, named Kanak Sarkar has been divested of his duties immediately after the incident came into notice of the University authority. The professor is suspended as per a notice issued by the Department of International Relations of the university.

Right after the professor made a Facebook comment comparing a “virgin girl” to “sealed bottle or sealed packet,” he faced strong protest of students and teachers of Jadavpur University (JU) and a large section of people across Bengal. This made the authority to take the immediate action along with the vice chancellor promising to take stringent action.

JU vice chancellor Suranjan Das said, “The incident is unfortunate and this is not desired from a professor. We will take action according to law. I have convened a meeting on Wednesday.” The Vice chancellor said this when a delegation of students met him.

As JU is one of the most premier institutions in the country, such an incident of a professor making a controversial remark on girls is punishable and degrades the status of the university.

Sarkar, is a professor of international relations, had allegedly the same objectionable comments both on campus and social media several times in the past as this has now been admitted by the students.

Snehabrishti Nandi, a spokesperson of the arts faculty student’s union, said, “The social media is not part of the JU campus but the authorities can take punishable action if students file direct complaints of sexual harassment and abuse against Sarkar.”

However, Sarkar, defending himself, continues to say that “My expressions may not have been proper but my intentions were not bad. In the past, I wrote numerous posts against rape and atrocities on women.” Notably, Sarkar came to the campus on Tuesday as well but was not allowed to take classes.

In the controversial comment, Sarkar compared a “virgin girl” to “sealed bottle or sealed packet” in a post. He added, “Many boys remain fool. They are not aware of virgin girl as wife.”

When the post went viral, Sarkar removed it and wrote another post saying he was free to express his opinion.
