GUWAHATI: In protest against the ‘anti-people’ policies adopted by the BJP-led Central Government and to highlight the distress of the working class, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and the Assam State Krishak Sabha (ASKS) are going to hold a joint nationwide jail bhoro andolan on August 9.

Talking to reporters in Guwahati on Monday, ASKS Secretary Tiken Das and CITU general secretary Tapan Sarma told the media here that along with rest of India, the two organizations will hold the agitation across all the districts in Assam. “The so called welfare policies adopted by the BJP-led Central Government has led the farmers and the labour class of the State to face gross devastation,” the duo said, adding, “Prices of petrol, diesel, essential commodities, including the farm produces like pesticide, seeds and desiccant are on the rise. On the other hand, prices on farmers’ produces are decreasing.” Considering all these, the duo said that farming has become a non-profit sector in the country now.

The duo stressed that since a sizable number of State’s farmers do not have pattas against their land holdings, they do not qualify for availing institutional loans from banks. “As a result, farmers are forced to access loan from private lenders at high interest rate.” Further, the duo highlighted that 70 per cent of the State’s farm lands are yet to be provided irrigation facilities.

Highly criticizing the Central Government for amending various labour Acts, the duo stated that to protect the interests of the Corporate, the Central Government has turned the labour class into slaves by introducing the ‘Fixed Term Employment’ in the name of labour reforms. “As a result, exploitation upon the labours class is taking the worst shape,” the duo said.

Further, the duo alleged that to dismantle the concerted agitation against the ‘misgovernance’ and ‘anti-people policies’ by the labour class across the nation, the BJP is plotting a communal and religious divide by introducing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
