SHILLONG, May 3: Six inmates, including five under trial prisoners (UTPs), made good their escape after overpowering guards at a district jail in Williamgar, the district headquarter of East Garo Hills district of Meghalaya.
Five of the escapees are arrested cadres of A’Chik Song An’Pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK). One is a convict of the 2012-Williamgar gang-rape.
The incident took place at around 2.30 pm on Sunday afternoon.
“On the pretext of taking the volleyball from the jail office, the five ASAK UTPs and one convict escaped by overpowering the prison guards,” he said.
The escapee convict has been identified as Chingkam Ch Marak. The fie UTPs are– Jasan Ch Marak, Grewith D Sangma, Sengchang Sangma, Raksim Momin, Dinesh Marak.
Meanwhile, sources said that the district police have been asked to launch a massive search operation to b all the escapees at the earliest.
Mentiobly, the jail was also attacked by militants in 2013.
An assistant jailor, Neil Warjri, and a jail warder, Sarai Thabah, were gunned down by militants inside the district jail in Williamgar on February 2, 2013.
