‘Jana Andolan’ on cards for transformation of Darrang district

MANGALDAI, June 1: In an apparent attempt to transform the Darrang district, allocated by ‘NITI Aayog’ as one of the 115 aspiration districts, an effort is being made by the district administration in collaboration with some members from the Piramal Foundation to launch a ‘Jana Andolon’ in the district. In order to expedite the process of transformation in the district, the process of ‘Jana Aandolan’ is being launched on June 2 at 11 am in Kharupetia College where thousands of people are supposed to be participated along with the Deputy Commissioner, Additional Deputy commissioner, government officials, students, teachers and general people of the district. Following the official launching of the campaign, an awareness rally is also slated for June 4 to be started from Kharupetia College.

It may be noted here that with a view to transform the district, a district transformation roadmap has also been created, keeping the major indicators like net enrollment ratio (NER), learning outcomes, female literacy, infrastructure, girls’ toilet, electricity and some other aspects is kept in mind. In this roadmap, the major issues of the district like female literacy, drop out, infrastructural problems have been highlighted. Along with the problems, the reasons behind such issues as well as the probable solutions to combat such problems have been mentioned.

On the other hand, to transform the district within a short period, a series of meeting, conference, workshop etc. were conducted between the district administration officials and some members of ‘Piramal Foundation’ where female literacy and drop out was found to be one of the major problems in the district. Hence, a door to door campaign would be launched in the villages first so that awareness regarding female literacy would start right at the grassroots level. In the past 10-12 days, along with other programmes, rallies were also conducted in around 250 villages and around 15,000 people (students, teachers, HMs, CRCs, community members etc) have been mobilized as a part of this process.

Finally, to ensure that the entire population of Darrang, irrespective of caste, economic status and class join hands and pledge to work together to create a more progressive and developed district, a district level campaign will be launched in co-ordination with the Education and PHE department in Kharupetia College on June 2. Deputy Commissioner of Darrang Ashok Kr Barman has requested all section of the society to come forward and join hands in the campaign.
