Shillong, January 3: Around 30 job seekers of West Jaintia district in Meghalaya were duped by a person who had promised them jobs even as victims had to sell off their lands or take loans to pay the fraudster.

The fraudster, Eikihun Chullet claims to be the president of the “Meghalaya Rural Development Organisation” which, according to him, executes centrally funded projects.

According to the victims, Chullet used the memorandum of association which belonged to a registered Self Help Group – Pasyih Elaka Shangpung SHG – to operate the Meghalaya Rural Development Organisation.

The victims alleged that even after their appointments, they were never paid salaries and on a few occasion Chullet signed cheques which later bounced.

The cheques bears account number 33822040966 which he opened at SBI Mynso Branch, West Jaintia Hills district.

The duped job seekers alleged that some appointment letters were purportedly signed by one “J. Hynniewta, director RBI (head office Shillong, Government of Meghalaya)”. They, however, said that they have never met this person. Another lady – P Pyrbot – who remained unidentified also signed another set of appointment letters.

“I sold off my land to pay Rs 9.50 lakh to him (Chullet) so that my daughter and granddaughter get employment,” Nebel Wann, a victim, told reporters today.

Similarly, Phaimin Lamin who had completed his BCA from Martin Luther Christian University paid Rs 2.48 lakh for the post of “Branch Mager”.

Among others who had paid money to Chullet for jobs were, Bibar Dkhar, Wiwatdab Iakai, Junom Suiam, Dapbiang Suiam, Damehi Siangshai and P. Lypon.

At least five FIRs have been lodged with Jowai police station in this connection.
