Joupi battalion motivates locals to cultivate lemongrass

KOHIMA, July 16: The location of Joupi Battalion of Security Forces in Chandel district of Manipur is one of the most underdeveloped areas in the country owing to its remoteness, treacherous terrain and inclement weather. Over the years, the local populace has always predominantly depended on the cultivation of the poppy plant for survival.

The battalion has motivated the populace to forsake poppy cultivation and embrace lemon grass cultivation in lieu. Over the last three months the unit has distributed lemon grass Saplings to 13 villages in this area. Recently the unit's Commandant Colonel Sachin Jain, SM has participated in distribution to four villages of Molanghat, Aibol Joupi, Hollengjang and Mombi in the area. In all a total of approximately 1 lakh saplings of lemon grass were distributed to the villagers, a press release informed on Monday.
