KHADC on uranium activities & EC’s role

SHILLONG, Feb 22: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), during the fil day of the Council session on Wednesday, while bringing a resolution pertaining to the construction of Wahkaji-Mawthabah road funded by Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL), resolved that ‘any matter related to Uranium cannot be done by the Executive Committee (EC) without prior approval of the house’. Nongkrem MDC, Shylla including Sohryngkham MDC, Pyniaid Sing Syiem suggested that the EC under Syiem should also write a letter to the Prime Minister of India appealing to exempt Meghalaya from Uranium activities. On this the CEM KHADC Syiem said, “The EC will first have to refer first to other Supreme Court ruling and discuss the matter properly before sending any letter to the Prime Minister of the country.” The KHADC has also taken a decision to scrap the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) dated January 12, 2006 signed between the Council and UCIL. The Council also resolved to cancel the No Objection Certificate (NOC) dated February 14, 2007 issued by the KHADC for the proposed extraction of Uranium ore at Kylleng-Pyndengsohiong Mawthabah. The Executive Committee shall constitute an independent inquiry pertaining to all aspects of the construction of the Wahkaji-MAwthabah road undertaken by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
