Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council Budget session begins on Monday

Report on reconstitution of Khasi Traditional Medicine Commission tabled

SHILLONG: On the first day of the Budget session of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) which started on Monday, Executive Member in-charge of traditional medicine TW Chyne placed a report of the Executive Committee on the reconstitution of the Khasi Traditional Medicine Commission.

Chyne said, “On expiry of the tenure of Khasi Traditional Medicine Commission, the executive committee of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) as required under Section 3 of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Protection and Promotion of Khasi Traditional Medicine) Act, 2011 is pleased to reconstitute the Commission.” He said that while the Chairman of the Commission is himself, the secretary is A Nonghuloo, joint secretary to the KHADC executive committee.

Chyne further said that there are four eminent Khasi traditional practitioners as members. They are Dr DL Nongspung, Dr Alka Kharsati, Dr Boss Myrthong and Dr Dlas Ran, besides two eminent practitioners – Dr JP Lyngdoh and Dr Balanstar Basaiawmoit – of other systems of medicine and four eminent members of the civil society. The civil society members are Dr AK Nongkynrih, Alantry F Dkhar, Kitboklang Nongphlang and Dr Don Syiem.

Chyne said that duties and functions of the Commission are laid down in the mentioned Act and rules framed thereunder.

Meanwhile, Opposition member in the House from Congress Ronnie V Lyngdoh questioned the appointment of Alantry F Dkhar and Kitboklang Nongphlang in the Commission.

“What kind of contribution can they bring to the commission as they are not experts in the field of traditional medicines?” he said.

Lyngdoh said that concerning Alantry Dkhar he may have been appointment due to political affiliation as he is the vice president of the UDP.

“In regards to Alantry Dkhar, it’s not because of any political affiliation. Iit’s due to his desire to contribute to the commission,” Chyne said. Kitboklang, according to him, has been appointed as a civil society member of the Commission because the District Council has signed an MoU with Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU).

Further, Ronnie V Lyngdoh suggested that as the KHADC has around 12 plantations, two of them should be used for planting herbal plants.
