Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council Conducts License Checks

A REPORTER

SHILLONG: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on January 21, conducted a checking of Trading License at Iewduh market in Shillong and were able to seize many items from shops sold illegally without a license issued by the district council.

Speaking to reporters, Executive Member in-charge Trade Latiplang Kharkongor informed that during the checking the Council’s enforcement personnel were able to seize items from 32 shops owned by non-tribals at Iewduh as they did not have proper documentation or Trading Licence from the district council to conduct business at the market.

He also said that the Council will take up the matter more seriously as many of the local Khasi women have stepped forward claiming that the items seized by the KHADC from the non-tribals are theirs.

Kharkongor also pointed out that if the KHADC has the power to implement its own Benami Act it will ensure that the trend of Khasi women claiming ownership of items and shops of non-tribals will be reduced.

“The Council will also make sure that it will be minutely examining the papers before issuing Trading Licences to non-tribals even if they have availed an NOC because we have to also ensure that the local indigenous people are not deprived of conducting business and earning a living in their own State,” he said.
