Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to discuss Linage Bill with JHADC

SHILLONG, Aug 28: The Consultative Committee (CC) constituted by Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to examine the KHADC (Khasi Social Custom of Linage) bill has taken a decision to request the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council CEM to invite members of the JHADC to also discuss and give suggestion on the Bill.

Speaking to reporters, on Tuesday, chairman of the committee Mansturdy Nongrem said, “The Khasi Social Custom of Linage Bill was brought in the year 1997 and was finally approved as an act in 2005 and later there were two amendments made and because we have recalled the bill hence the committee was constituted to improve the bill.”

Informing that this is the first meeting of the committee to discuss on the bill, he said, “We have taken a decision that this committee should not be confined only to Khasi hills however we have decided that the committee will approach the KHADC CEM HS Shylla on the need to include members from the JHADC in the committee.” He said the committee is of the opinion that any decision cannot be taken only by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council however there should be joint effort with our friend’s from Jaintia hills because this bill is for the interest of both the Khasi and Jaintia. When asked when the committee will hold a meeting next with members of the JHADC, he said, “As of right now we cannot fix any date for the next meeting of the committee because we must first approach our fellow MDCs in the JHADC,” he said.
