Khasi Students Union (KSU) protests killing of local person in disputed area

Shillong: Taking strong exception to the death of a Khasi villager, identified as Tyngshain Mukhim, due to alleged assault by a non-indigeneous person at Madan Umwang, an area in the disputed location of Assam and Meghalya, the Khasi Students Union (KSU) held a sit-in protest at the parking lot of the Additional Secretariat on in Shillong on Wednesday.

The sit-in protest is not merely to book the accuse but also to pressurize the government to settle the inter-State boundary dispute at the earliest. “Our people have been suffering because the two State governments cannot resolve the inter-State boundary dispute and the worst brunt is faced by the khasi brethrens in the hands of the non-indigeneous people,” stated the KSU presedent Lambok Marngar while out rightly pointing at the Nepaleese migrants and settlers of being the cause of all ills along the disputed areas of Assam-Meghalya border.

“We have lost four of our brethrens in 2010 in Langpih because of the same people and one more lost his life a week ago,” adding, it’s about time for the government to seriously look into and solve the border dispute at the earliest. Accusing the Government of being complacent, Marngar said, while Assam provides all the necessary security cover to its own people, our government has done nothing.” He said, “We will not hesitate to take the mantle in ourselves if the government provides us with the ammunitions to counter such threats.

Making reference to the 1979 and 1987 riots, Marngar stated, “We do not want to have a repetition of the same episode but the government should start pushing with its short term solution till the long term solution is arrived at.

More than 200 KSU members convered with placards to denounced the recent killing as well as to expressed their serious concern over the events that unfolded at Madan Umwang, located in the fringes of Ri-Bhoi and Karbi-Anglong district of Assam.
