2018 ASSEMBLY POLLS

Shillong, May 24: The Khun Hynniewtrep tiol Awakening Movement (KHM) has approved to the mooted idea of having an alliance of the three regiol parties in the state in order to keep the Congress at bay in the state Assembly elections scheduled early next year.

The idea was first proposed by the UDP leader H.S.Shylla who felt such an alliance of the three regiol political parties will make it difficult for the congress party to come back to power. Officially reciprocating the move, KHM President Adilberth Nongrum, to0ld newsmen in Shillong on Wednesday, “We appreciate the gesture and it imperative for the regiol parties to cobble such an alliance to deter the Congress and the BJP from coming to power”. However, Nongrum added that such an alliance that needed self sacrifice should not be a path to save any crumbling political entity.

The KHM leader also desired that the initiator of the idea must start the process of consultations to achieve that end ahead of the Assembly elections, even as he thrust on the importance of the deliberations that will have to dwell on the issues confronting the indigenous tribes.

Asked on whether the KHM is ready for a unification of the regiol parties, Nongrum reply was nonchalant even as he iterates that it is time for every regiol party to come together. The HSPDP has already taken a stand that it will not field any candidate in constituencies where another regiol party is strong. The UDP has not officially reciprocated to the proposal except for HS Shylla open proposal to such a political scheme.
