SHILLONG, July 31: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) State Youth Wing (SYW) on Tuesday urged the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to carry out more checking in different parts of the city in the matter of labour licence.

The Movement is this regard has also submitted a memorandum to the Executive Member (EM) in charge Labour in the district council.

It may be reminded that KHNAM State Youth Wing from time to time have been conducting surprise checking of labour licence at various location due to concern over the growing influx of illegal immigrants in the State.

“After the notification of the final NRC in the State of Assam, there is a fear that these illegal immigrants could penetrate into other States as labours. Meghalaya has being a soft target to illegal immigrants for the last five decades and most of these illegal immigrants have found safe haven in Meghalaya in the name of cheap labour. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the KHADC to be a partner to curbed illegal influx,” Thomas Passah said here on Tuesday.

He informed that the KHNAM State Youth Wing had carried out a surprise inspection of a project undertaken by L&T Company at a site located at NEIGRIHMS and hundreds of labourers working at this project do not have a labour licence from the KHADC, these labourers have made temporary shelters at the site and labourers are on regular shift between Assam and Meghalaya, it is reported that these labourers could be illegal immigrants whose name have not been included in the NRC of Assam. Almost 40 lakhs people have not been included in the Final NRC of Assam and this is a very big reason for the KHADC to adopt additional measures to ensure that our identity if protected at all time.
