BREAKTHROUGH

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Close on the heels of the Assam Police’s crackdown on those running syndicates, the Crime Branch of Guwahati Police has achieved a major breakthrough by arresting one Sharfaraz, the kingpin of cattle smuggling syndicate in the State.

A team of the Crime Branch of City Police with the help of the Bihar Police on Saturday arrested Sharfaraz (43) from Gopalganj district in Bihar. He was brought to the city on Monday. The police have so far arrested six persons including Sharfaraz on charges of running the syndicate of smuggling cattle to Bangladesh. The arrest of Sharfaraz was possible on the basis of the confessional statement of another accused Dildar Hussain arrested earlier.

It may be mentioned here that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal recently instructed the Assam Police to launch a crackdown on those running syndicates in the State. Guwahati Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar said Sharfaraz was the main man behind smuggling cattle to Bangladesh from North India. He said Sharfaraz was earlier a truck driver in Assam and the police is trying to get details as to how got into the illegal trade of smuggling. Kumar appreciated the Bihar Police for its cooperation in arresting Sharfaraz.

Since beef is one of the main and favourite food items in Bangladesh, cattle smuggling from Assam and other neighboring States has emerged as a major illegal trade to earn money.
