Lakhimpur masses demand road repair, block highway

LAKHIMPUR: People staged road blockade on Tuesday to demand repair of the Hatilung-Jorhatia Road which connects NH-15 in Lakhimpur. During the agitation, the people of the area blocked the road by burning tyres and shouted slogans to repair the road soon. The road has been in a dilapidated condition since the flood caused by Ranganadi River after the release of excess water from Ranganadi dam critically affected the road in 2017.

Since then the PWD has not initiated any steps to repair the road. The people alleged that the Lakhimpur district administration had turned a deaf ear to several petitions which were submitted to demand immediate repair of the road, compelling them to stage the agitation.

The protesters were led by Pramod Saikia, Rebat Saikia, Mridul Saikia and BAYM working president Anupam Saikia. They submitted a memorandum to the Lakhimpur DC in support of their demand.
