Lakhimpur Police to take steps for preventing road accidents

LAKHIMPUR: Lakhimpur Police administration will take strict steps to prevent road accidents in the district. Similar steps will be taken to mitigate the parking problem in North Lakhimpur town too. This was declared by Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Lakhimpur, Pranab Kumar Pegu on Tuesday while taking part in a seminar on road safety in the presence of dignitaries of various organizations and eminent citizens.

Increasing number of road mishaps has become a major concern. On the other hand, people have suffered a lot due to lack of proper parking places in North Lakhimpur town. This problem has been intensified by a section of unruly bikers and car drivers devoid of civic sense. Under such circumstances, effective steps to resolve the problems in the district are the need of the hour.

With this objective in view, a seminar on ‘Road Safety and Traffic Management in Lakhimpur’ was organized in the conference hall of the SP office under the aegis of Lakhimpur district police administration on Tuesday. Taking part as the resource person of the event, ASP Pranab Kumar Pegu made a power-point presentation on the discussed topic in reference to Lakhimpur.

“India accounts for highest number of road deaths in the world as per a survey done by IRF of Geneva. It accounts for 10 per cent of global road accidents. The country tops in the world in number of deaths in road accidents, that is 1.46 lakh fatalities,” he said during the presentation.

He added that due consultation with the civil administration was underway to find out measures in order to prevent road accidents and to mitigate parking problem and reduce traffic congestion in the district. “The process of implementation of the steps to be taken is also under deep consideration and consultation with executive magistrates is on,” he said.

Social activist Uday Sankar Hazarika, NLMBOA president Pulin Borah, North Lakhimpur AASU president Pranjit Gogoi, MASS secretary Raju Singha, journalist Prasanta Kumar Modak and tax consultant Nanda Kishor Rathi forwarded various suggestions. MVI Makhan Kumar Dutta, OC of North Lakhimpur Police Station, Aditya Prakash Deori, and Traffic Branch in-charge Biswjit Nath also took part in the event.
