Lakhimpur Sachetan Nagarik Mancha launches plantation drive

LAKHIMPUR: Lakhimpur Sachetan Nagarik Mancha (LSNM), which was constituted with a view to initiate effective moves for the betterment of the district, has taken up a series of programmes for the maintenance of healthy ecological environment. As a part of these programmes, the organization has chalked out an aspiring plan to plant saplings by the side of the 10-km long Lakhimpur by-pass.

The organization gave a momentum to the plan on Sunday in connection with World Environment Day on June 5. Lakhimpur DC Dr. Jeevan B formally inaugurated the plantation drive at Lilabari Road and the Lakhimpur by-pass connecting point in the presence of a galaxy of eminent citizens of the district.

The public meeting organized on the occasion was chaired by LSNM working president-cum-retired professor Naren Sarmah. Former journalist and vice-president of LSNM, Harnul Rashid explained the aims and objective of the organization.

Gracing the occasion as chief guest, Dr. Jeevan B admired the works of the organization in addition to highlighting the district administration’s plans chalked out under Total Infrastructural Development Fund in the district. Participating in the programme, North Lakhimpur Municipal Board chairperson Surya Phukan, Lakhimpur District Swachh Bharat Mission Brand Ambassador, journalist Ranjit Kakati, forest department official Bombeswar Gogoi, social activist Raja Borah, Dr. Abhedra Kumar Burhagohain and Guna Krishna Koch delivered speeches on the conservation of nature and maintaining cleanliness and hygiene across the district.

On Sunday, over 100 saplings were planted on the stipulated spot. Businessman and social activist of North Lakhimpur, Jagdish Bajaj extended special co-operation in organizing the programme while Raja Borah has shouldered the responsibility of taking care of the planted saplings.
