From Staff Correspondent

Shillong, May 1: DD Lapang, the chief adviser to the Government and the chairman of the empowered committee to look into the probability of institutiolizing the tradition institutions, cited the Chief Minister’s engagements for failing to call the first ever meeting after its constitution.

The empowered high level committee with 50-odd members was notified on April, 1st. It was given a three months time period to examine, on whether a legislative measure is required, apart from the directive to come out with a model bill.

A month has lapsed and the chairman said, “We had initially fixed a date but had to cancel due to the Chief Minister’s engagement, his tour outside the country and the recent farmer’s rally in New Delhi.” Lapang said he wanted the Chief Minister to formally launched the first phase of the dialogue on the sensitive issue. “There may be anxiety amongst the people, but we are sincere to complete the process in the stipulated period,” Lapang said, adding that the government is looking for “constitutiol altertives”.
