Lawyers’ Association, Guwahati opposes Bill

GUWAHATI, June 12: Demanding withdrawal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 the Lawyers’ Association, Guwahati on Tuesday carried out a procession and submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of the Kamrup (M) addressing the Prime Minster and the Joint Parliamentary Committee of the Bill. In a communiqué, the general secretary of the Lawyers Association, Guwahati Amal Chandra Baisya said that by visibly violating the Article 6, 21, 29 and 326 of the Indian Constitution, huge chunk of foreign nationals are tried to be granted citizenship by introducing the Bill posing a threat to the language, culture and the literature of the state. In a secular state like India, implementation of such Bill to accommodate lakh of foreign nationals will cause extinction threat to the ethnic groups and various sub groups of Assam.

Meanwhile, the Association also condemned the lynching of two youths at Dokmoka, Karbi Anglong district and demanded to confer stringent punishment to the culprits. They also appealed individuals and organizations not to fabricate the incident with political motive.
