Itagar, May 26: Irked over the dilapidated condition of the Longding-Kanubari-Bimalapur road, considered as the lifeline of the people of the district, the Longding District Students’ Union (LDSU) has threatened resorting to democratic movement if the state government fails to convert the road into a fair-weather road within one month. The union also submitted a four-point charter of demands to state Chief Secretary today in this regard. “Despite several representations to the district authority, no initiative has been taken till today to improve the condition of the sole road of the district,” LDSU president Manlem Wangsu told reporters here on Monday. The Longding-Bimalapur road was funded for renovation by BARD under Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) but the quality of work was non-worthy, the union alleged. The road was constructed during 2004-05 and since then no major renovation works were done despite sufficient fund against it, the union added. It further alleged that during the last fincial year an amount of two crore was sanctioned against the road under TFC fund and earlier an amount of 23 crores under the RIDF, but ironically the funds were misused without any work.

Demanding the state government for extension of the Trans Aruchal Highway from Longding to Khonsa via Tissa town, the LDSU said that after handing over the construction work of the road portion from Longding to Lohthong to JKM, the construction work came to a sudden halt without any valid reasons. Informing that the people of the district were facing hardship due to the pathetic condition of the road in getting food items, electricity, construction materials and especially during medical emergency. The union also demanded for posting sufficient teacher for quality education and uninterrupted power supply in the backward district known for insurgency.
