Whither Social Welfare Department?

A lot needs to be done with respect to the Social Welfare department so that its image gets refurbished. We are not exactly sure about embezzlement of money meant for the welfare of the poor people under the present ruling dispensation. But the way things are moving in the department raise questions in the minds of the citizens about its credibility.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had announced an amount of Rs. 5000 to each of the differently-able persons of the State a few months back. But on inquiry, it has come to light that even after a gap of several months the mentioned amount has not been remitted to the banks (for reasons best known to the department).

One such beneficiary is a relative of mine. A resident of Santipara, this young boy, who is totally blind, has been asking me if the amount is credited to his account. Obviously with the amount, his family somehow living from hand to mouth would have been benefited. But Alas! Getting things done in the corridors of power appears to be a chimera!

Through your esteemed daily, we appeal to the Chief Minister to institute a probe into such matters and punish the defaulting officers if found guilty.

Ashok Bordoloi,

Dibruarh.
