Hooliganism by student leaders

With the unprecedented growth in the number of student bodies and organizations in the state in recent times, which purportedly describes themselves as self-styled messiah of a particular class of people which raises its voice in every other issue is not a bad sign for a healthy democracy. But what has been a worrying cause of concern is extortion in the name of donations by these so-called leaders whose soft-targets are businessmen, doctors, teachers and their influence on these people is many fold if they turn out to be from non-indigenous communities of the state. That is attributed to the fact that such leaders who are mostly unemployed amass disproportionate properties and wealth to their known sources of income and not many days when Assam will be tagged by outsiders as 'Land of Chanda'. The recent incident in Sivasagar where a businessman was physically abused, humiliated, morally tortured and moral-policed in police station by leaders of a least heard organization is condemnable in strongest terms. The timely action and courage of Sivasagar police who taking suo-moto of the incident have arrested the three alleged perpetrators is praiseworthy. These so-called leaders emerging out in a night have been carrying out such hooliganism and harassment on the common people by shielding themselves with their organizational banner and sometimes by political immunity and patronage; they enjoy which also makes them escape law of the land. Deterrence and stricter laws, especifically dealing with such incidents by such leaders, are the need of the hour to discourage such persons from future criminal acts by instilling fear and understanding of the consequences.

Time for a new political party

The present scenario of Assam shows a gloomy future. The people of Assam seem to be bewildered and in a state of disbelief. The successive governments in the state have been betraying the people in one way or the other. Even the regional party which ruled Assam for ten years could not show any remarkable development for the people. The main issue of illegal foreigners under the banner of which it came to power was kept untouched. The latest betrayal to the people of Assam has been done by the present BJP government. The party has been playing with the sentiment of the people of Assam. The two main issues on which the party could get overwhelming support from the people of Assam are, (1) a corruption free administration (2) detection and deportation of illegal foreigners from the state. Although a few steps on corruption free issue were seen to be taken at the initial stage, no action has been taken for the second agenda on the illegal foreigners. To add fuel on this burning problem, the BJP government wants to add another burden of illegal foreigners on Assam by the way of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Now the main point is that, the next Lok Sabha election is knocking at the door. It is the time for our intellectuals thought for the future generation of Assam. The People of Assam have to think twice well in advance before exercising their franchise in the coming election. In our opinion, our genuine intellectuals of Assam, at this juncture must create a forum to discuss the issue relating to the future of Assam. This is the time to make a platform of peoples (In the name of say, Xomaj Xosetan dol ) like, D.N Bezboruah, Deven Dutta, D.N Chakravarty, W. Hussain, H.K. Deka, N. Zaman, S. Rajkhewa, P.G. Baruah to mention a few. This forum must avoid peoples of double standard, politically motivated, popularity gaining intellectuals etc. This platform can select suitable MPs across the state, irrespective of religion, cast and language, who can voice in the Assembly against any injustice done for the people of Assam. We want MP having oratory power to defend for the people, having corruption free mind, to think for people of Assam above any political gain, and above all, a true intention for serving for the people of Assam. Let us hope for the best.
