State hooch tragedy

The death toll due to consumption of spurious liquor on the night of February 21, 2019 by people of tea gardens of Jorhat and Golaghat districts mounted to over 100 and many more under treatment in various hospitals, and might suffer imminent death.

Now, the question arises as to who are responsible for this horrible and unprecedented death toll in this way. I think the Excise departments of Government and Tea Gardens authorities are mostly responsible. I would, therefore, like to request the Government, to look into this serious matter and take appropriate steps in the issue, as well as to take steps so that no such incidents may occur in future.

Incident of terrorism

On February 14, 2019 -- the fatal Thursday mercilessly plucked away 44 of the blossoming souls from our midst while on duty.

Normally, all deaths are cruel but seldom has a death become so tragic as to challenge life and intensify the human desire to live for common good.

I deeply mourn the dastardly killing of 44 valiant soldiers including one from Assam in J&K. The entire Country was taken by surprise and shock by this dastardly act.

I pay my most respectful homage to the memory of the departed valiant soldiers and offer my heartfelt condolence to the members of the bereaved families. These brave men dedicated their life to champion the cause of the Country and its people. It is a bereavement which I share with poignant grief.

I have in this respect my own tale to tell. It is a grim situation and I feel that the Government and the people shall rise equal to the occasion and resolutely combat the menace of terrorism at every step. The Government should, therefore, take effective steps to severely deal with the perpetrators of such heinous crimes to root it out from Indian society, since terrorism of any kind is certainly a great curse to humanity as a whole. If the Government does not do so, we shall have no end of such activities later on.

Parimal Suklabaidya and his portfolios

It is very difficult to feel the pulse of the people particularly when it comes to the case of a minister, it is even more difficult. Parimal Suklabaidya is unfortunate in the sense that among other portfolios that are under him, he got two very anomalous and complicated portfolios-Excise and Forest. About Excise, what the people of Assam experienced is horrible.

In fact, this department had been so groomed by the successive governments that corruption gets embedded in the department from head to toe. If men die consuming toxic liquor, let them die. All that the officials worry about is to enrich their personal coffer.

In my personal opinion, Parimal Suklabaidya is made a scapegoat. We feel that for his honest background, the Sonowal led Government gave him certain lucrative departments. Incidentally, during Congress regime, many ministers made a rat-race for getting such lucrative portfolios. Now, let us take the case of Forest department. It is fact that not a single day passes without a report in the electronic or print media about the misdeeds of the forest mafias.

The minister Parimal Suklabaidya seems to be helpless with all that goes on in the department be it the mafia or corrupt officials or he might dance to the tune of the bureaucrats. It seems things are going out of his grip. We know that a desperate situation needs a desperate handling. If Parimal Suklabaidya cannot show his mettle being rough and tough towards all those resorting to mafiaraj and corruption, he should resign. This is equally applicable to the Excise department.
