Letters To The Editor- Ali-Kooli legacy

Ali-Kooli legacy

It is really sad that the Devkant Barua’s “Ali-Kooli” legacy is still prevalent in the minds of the present generation politicians. It is indeed very bad that these two communities are very often being targeted by politicians to derive political mileage in the housings. Of late, the government of the day is targeting the tea garden communities of the state with various freebies like rice, sugar, mobile, cash etc. One thing is for sure that freebies are curses to the community. Freebies make people lazy and useless. Tea workers are largely illiterate people. Taking advantage of the situation the government wants to purchase the community for vote. Obviously, this is an insult to the tea community. The educated tea workers must oppose such practices pursued by people in power.

If our politicians/ government really care for the well being and up-liftmen of the community as a whole then they must concentrate on two basic issues: one is to provide good health care second, provide quality education to their children. These two issues alone can help the community to come up in life. However, politicians wouldn’t do that because that would jeopardize their long term policy to use them as vote bank. In the same breadth I would like to add that most of the tea gardens in Assam are owned by private corporates. Therefore, it is obvious that our tea workers are in organized sectors. It is the statutory requirement on the part of the corporates to look after the wellbeing of tea workers. State government should only keep checks and balances. I don’t know why the state government is breaking their head to take ‘care’ of the tea workers when teeming millions are suffering for want of a square meal and shelter in our poor state itself. It is desired that the policy makers must spent public resources very judiciously.
