Double whammy for BJP?

The BJP has faced the double whammy of not being able to table the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 and the amendment Bill meant for according ST status to the six ethnic groups of Assam in the Rajya Sabha to get their passage in the last session of the present Parliament. Falling short of majority in the Elder’s House, it was a foregone conclusion for the BJP that getting these two Bills their passage in the Upper House would not be cake walk for it. But then, why had the Saffron party gone for such a misadventure? Political pundits want to point their fingers at West Bengal that has as many as forty parliamentary constituencies being too lucrative for the BJP to miss. If this is so, the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 is the ticket for the BJP to make its inroad into West Bengal in the coming Lok Sabha poll in a big way. However, the moot question remains that: why should the Centre take such a step at the cost of Assam and other States in the Northeast. Even if the BJP has its access into the electorate in West Bengal, it will be very hard for it to heal the injury it has already inflicted on the people of Assam and the entire Northeast. One of the immediate effects of such a misadventure on the part of the BJP is such that the AASU and the NESO have already made it clear that they are going to work with ‘secular’ parties while maintaining their apolitical character intact. A glaring example is that the people of Assam and the Northeast cannot digest even today former Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru’s radio broadcast during Chinese invasion of India (Assam-NEFA) ‘my heart goes out to the people of Assam’.
