Life-size statue of Kiang Nongbah to be unveiled in December

SHILLONG, Oct 18: The Deputy Commissioner Office East Jaintia Hills District along with the AJYWO Central Body has started construction work on the life- size statue of U Kiang ngbah, a legendary freedom fighter of the Jaintia people at Khliehriat.

The statue is expected to be unveiled on 30 December.

It may be recalled that the AJYWO Central Body under the leadership of M H Dkhar, had recently submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner EJHD W. R Lyngdoh request him to find ways and means to construct a statue depicting the legendary freedom fighter of the Jaintia Kingdom U Kiang Nongbah.

The Deputy Commissioner W. R Lyngdoh along with local MLAs from the region including AJYWO leaders in a meeting on April 3 at the office of the DC, EJHD took the decision to construct the statue of Kiang Nongbah.

“It is the duty of the Jaintia people to remember and honour Kiang ngbah who fought bravely against the British invasion in the year 1862,” MH Dkhar, President AJYWO Central Body said. The AJYWO has also expressed their appreciation to the Deputy Commissioner EJHD WR Lyngdoh including two local MLAs from the region Ma Justine Dkhar and Ma Hopeful Bamon for fulfilling the request.
