Liquor shops in Guwahati to remain close for Chhath Puja on November 13

Guwahati: To ensure public peace and maintain law and order condition in the city during the Chhath Puja, The Kamrup District Administration in a circular notice ordered that all the retail IMFL ON/OF/ Club licenses and all the country spirit shops on AT Road from Adabari covering Maligaon-Pandu area to Vishal Mega Mart point and on M.G.Road from Bharalumukh to Guwahati Club (covering Panbazar, Fancy Bazar and Kumarpara area) of Kamrup Metropolitan district will remain closed from 4 pm onwards on November 13.

The Kamrup District Administration conferred the order under section 52(1) of the Assam Excise Act, 2000 on Monday.

It may be mentioned that Chhath Puja is an ancient Hindu festival, dedicated to Lord Surya and Chhathi Maiya (known to be the wife of Surya), Chhath Puja is unique to the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Eastern Uttar Pradesh and the country of Nepal.

It is the only Vedic festival that is dedicated to the Sun God, who is supposed to be the source of all powers and Chhathi Maiya (another name for Goddess Usha from the Vedic period). The god of light, energy and life force is worshipped in order to promote well being, development and the prosperity of human beings. Through this festival, people aim towards thanking the Sun God for a period of four days. The devotees who observe the fast during this festival are called Vrati.
