Lok Sabha Election In State: Election Department Gears Up For Counting

GUWAHATI: With just six days left for the counting of votes slated on May 23, the State Election Department, Assam, is all geared up to begin the process of vote-counting for the 2019 general elections. Talking to The Sentinel on Thursday, Chief Election Officer (CEO), Assam, MC Sahu said, “The necessary instructions and guidelines have been already dispatched to the Returning Officers, Deputy Commissioners (DCs), Sub-Divisional Officers (SDOs)-Civil, and Election Officers (EOs) in this regard.”

Central Observers deputed by the Election Commission (EC) will monitor the counting of votes across the State. A three-layer security arrangement with personnel of CAPF (Central Armed Police Force) and Assam Police has been arranged in all the counting centres.

The EVMs and VVPATs are presently stored in 51 strong rooms across the State. The counting of votes will commence from 8 am on May 23. As per a directive of the Supreme Court, randomly selected Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips will be tallied with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). However since it is a time-consuming process, the results are likely to be declared only after 4 pm that day.

The entire process will be captured live in videos. Simultaneous counting will take place across 14 counting tables for each Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC). After counting the votes polled in the EVMs of a particular LAC, slips of five randomly selected VVPATs of that LAC will be checked and tallied with the number of polled votes in the EVMs. After that, the slips will be put back in the respective VVPATs that will be sealed and finally locked in the strong rooms.
