Lok Sabha Election: Intense Campaign By BJP, Congress

GUWAHATI: With the onset of the third phase of the poll on April 23 at Guwahati, Barpeta, Dhubri and Kokrajhar constituencies, both parties of BJP and Congress have upped their ante and are in an open competition with each other.

In Guwahati, the fierceness of the parties campaign are tantamount with wide rallies organized for both BJP candidate Queen Ojha and Congress candidate Bobeeta Sharma. During the past two Lok Sabha elections, the Guwahati constituency voters were in favor of the saffron party and the Congress party is trying to turn the tide, while the BJP party is striving hard to continue their winning trend.

With the BJP devising new war strategies, the party has fielded a candidate only for the Guwahati constituency in the third phase poll, while the other constituencies are being contested by alliance parties. The BJP party has pulled all stops to push forward their candidate for Guwahati constituency, Queen Ojha. The party has also set up various temporary offices in different locations of the city.

According to state BJP sources, NEDA convener Himanta Biswa Sharma will continue his road show in prime locations of Guwahati. Sharma convened a road rally at Borkhetri LAC on Wednesday. Moreover, BJP members will also hold road meetings and has planned door to door campaigns. The Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and party president Ranjit Dass will address the chief rally.

On the other hand, in comparison to BJP, the Congress party campaign is rather demure. The party has also not set up temporary offices around the city. The focal point of campaign for the Congress party is the issue of Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) and the development of Guwahati. Even though the campaign is slow in the city, they have campaigned rather fiercely around the nearby areas of Guwahati.

Meanwhile, the Assam Pradesh Congress Community is taking the Guwahati constituency rather seriously and has appointed five campaign and election management in charge.

MLA Ajanta Neog has been given the responsibility of West Guwahati LAC, Rana Goswami of Hajo and Borkhetri LAC, Pradyut Bordoloi of Dispur and East Guwahati LAC, Sushanta Boragohain of Polashbari, Chaygaon, Boko and Dudnoi LAC, and MK Bhanu of Jalukbari LAC.
