Lok Sabha Election: Turnout All-Time High In Assam

GUWAHATI: The overall turnout of voters during the recently concluded three-phase Lok Sabha election in Assam has created an all-time record with 81.52 percent. The total voters enlisted was 2,19,91,112. The 2019 general elections in Assam were held on April 11, 18, and 23.

The percentage during the 2014 general elections in the State was 80.21 percent which was a record in the State up till then. The total voters during the 2014 polls were 1,88,04,421. During the 2009 general elections, the voters’ turnout was 69.58 percent. The total listed voters then were 1,74,43,617. However, the turnout of voters during the last Assembly polls in 2016 was 84.72 percent which is also a record. The total number of voters was 1,99,47,690.

During the third phase of the recently conducted Lok Sabha polls, the highest voters’ turnout was in Dhubri Parliamentary constituency at 90.66%, followed by Barpeta (86.60%), Kokrajhar (83.16%), and Gauhati (80.81%). Three Legislative Assembly segments under Dhubri HPC recorded high voters’ turnout this time. These are Jaleswar (93.86%), South Salmara (92.37%), and Golakganj (91.73%). The total number of voters across these four HPCs was 74,77,062. The total turnout in the third phase was 85.11%

The lowest voters’ turnout has been recorded in Dhemaji LAC under Lakhimpur HPC (among the three phases) with 70.16%.

During the first phase Parliamentary polls in Assam held on April 11, the percentage of voters’ turnout was 78.27. Kaliabor HPC topped with 82.09 per cent followed by Tezpur (79.14%), Jorhat (77.49%), Dibrugarh (77.26%), and Lakhimpur (75.05%). The total number of voters across these five HPCs was 76,03,458.

Voters’ turnout in the second phase polls in the State was 81.20 per cent with Mangaldoi topping the list at 83.60 per cent, followed by Nowgong (83.24%), Silchar (79.40%), Karimganj (79.08%) and Autonomous District – Diphu (77.47%). The total number of voters across these five HPCs was 69,10,592.

Huge enthusiasm was noticed among voters with a large number of people queuing up in front of their respective polling stations since very early in the morning to cast their votes across the State.
