Magh Bihu Celebrated With Great Ardour

Dibrugarh: Magh Bihu, one of the most important and popular festivals of Assam, was observed with great ardour in Dibrugarh. The celebrations started on Monday evening to mark Uruka, an occasion characterised by al-fresco community feasts, symbolic of the abundant agricultural produce being stocked in the granaries at this time of the year. The feast, more popular by the name of Bhuj, was followed by the lighting of the Meji the following morning.

On the occasion, the traditional Bhelaghars were also built at various places. People across all ages were seen taking part in the festivities associated with the occasion. Various kinds of pithas, including, Til (Sesame) Pitha, Nariyal (Coconut) Pitha and Ghila Pitha, apart from Larus made of coconut and jaggery, and other traditional food items, were prepared in plenty and served to the guests. As a mark of respect and sound value-system, the younger ones were seen taking blessings of the elder ones. People, cutting across many communities and religions, were seen exchanging Bihu greetings on social media as well as in person.

DEMOW: Magh Bihu was celebrated in Demow and its surrounding areas with fanfare. Mejis were burnt and among all the Bhelaghars in Demow and all the surrounding areas, the Bhelaghar which was designed as the man-elephant conflict in Padumoni Gaon near Demow grabbed the attention of the people. It took 18 days to make the Bhelaghar. Jadab Dutta, along with the people of Padumoni Gaon has designed the Bhelaghar. On January 15, Maghi Utsav was organized near the Bhelaghar in Padumoni Gaon. The cultural nights were organized on January 14 and January 15. The traditional mela at Dehajan and Kachuma were held and it was attended by thousands of people who came to enjoy the famous cock fight. However, on the day of Magh Bihu, a protest programme was also taken against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 in Demow.
