Mahanta, Gogoi make strange bedfellows

GUWAHATI, May 31: Not only politics, people’s interest too makes strange bedfellows. This was seen in Guwahati where lifelong political and ideological vete noirs – former chief ministers Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and Tarun Gogoi and a number of Left leaders including Hemen Das and Uddhab Barman, besides Dr. Hiren Gohain shared the same forum to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 on Thursday.

A sit-in strike against the Bill was organized by the joint coordination committee of the Forum Against Citizenship Act Amendment Bill and the Left-Democratic Mancha (LDM) at Lakhidhar Bora Khetra in Guwahati on Thursday.

Addressing the gathering, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said: “Citizenship can’t be accorded to anyone based on his/her religion. Today we – natural enemies like snake and mongoose – have teamed up here. This essentially makes it crystal clear that when it comes to the interests of the State, we can bury the hatchet and sing the same chorus.”

In his speech Tarun Gogoi said: “This fight is not of a single front. It’s the fight of all fronts in Assam. Assam came up winner in any fight in the past. We’re certain that in this fight as well, Assam will come out triumphant. The Assamese are calm by nature. However, when they wake up they wake up extremely. This is certain that this agitation has left none untouched in the State.”

Dr. Hiren Gohain said: “The country and Assam have encountered a crisis. A conspiracy is being hatched against us. Sitting tight at home won’t do. Efforts are being made to make us slaves. They’re out to shift the system from democracy to slavery. There won’t be any right to think independently after the passage of the Bill. We need to oppose the Bill with all might we’ve under our disposal.”
