Itanagar, May 14: In a major crackdown against drug peddlers, the Lower Dibang Valley district Police on Sunday arrested nine persons, including a woman, with three of them being State government employees and two police personnel along with 17.5 grams cocaine from Roing area in the district.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of Roing police led by sub-inspectors Abraham Taying, Mohan Milli and Padi Nikang conducted a raid in the house of one Yubi Mega of Cheta-II village, during which they apprehended three accused identified as constable of Roing PS Monu Sonowal, constable of SP’s Office of Kurung Kumey district Mikhail Mito and the house owner Yubi Mega.

Four packets of cocaine weighing 14.50 grams were also seized from their possession, police sources stated on Monday.

During their grilling at the police station, the arrested persons revealed that they had gone to Changlang and bought the said consignment of drugs from a Chakma person on May 11 last. Further, they also revealed the names of other peddlers who had sent money along with them for buying the drugs on their behalf.

Police said another raid was instantly conducted in the house of Atoga Pulu at Mayu-II, Roing. The police team on arrival found Atoga Pulu and his mother Samine Mega packing the drugs for selling it to the potential customers.

A plastic packet containing cocaine weighing 3 grams, two digital-weighing machines and hard cash amounting to Rs 34,300 were recovered and seized from the possession of mother-son duo in the presence of DSP Opir Paron and Town Magistrate Sanjay Taram. The subsequent interrogation of the arrested persons led to the arrest of other co-drug peddlers identified as Sokho Mendo, Biju Mega, Shiv Linggi and Ege Miso, who is stated to be a government employee. A police case under the NDPS Act has been registered at the Roing PS and further investigations have been launched.

District SP Sanjay Kumar Sain has, meanwhile, lauded the police team for their prompt and swift action that led to the arrest of drug peddlers. He said that many unofficial complaints had been received about the involvement of police personnel in drug peddling in the district. This was degrading the image of the police fraternity and also demoralizing others, Sain added. The SP said that both the police personnel involved in drug peddling had been placed under immediate suspension and in custody.
