Mangos seized and destroyed

GUWAHATI, May 25: A team of food safety officials led by Tarun Das, Samiran Boruah and Anil Sarma has seized 12.50 quintal of mango worth Rs 62 thousand allegedly for using of carbide chemical from Fancy Bazaar fruit market this morning. The carbide used mangos were later destroyed with the help of the GMC officials.

Notably, carbide used to ripen mangoes can cause cancer as it contains arsenic and phosphorus, both of which can prove fatal for human beings. It is pertinent to mention here that allegation on artificial ripening of fruits using deadly chemicals has been a concern since years in Guwahati.
