Manipur State Cabinet Decides to Introduce ‘Manipur Mob Violence Control and Prohibition Bill’ to Check Rising Mob Lynching Cases

The repeated incidents of mob violence and the loss of innocent lives has compelled the Manipur state cabinet to take the decision of introducing the ‘Manipur Mob Violence Control and Prohibition Bill’ in the State Legislative Assembly. The statewide protest condemning the lynching of a 26-years-old man called Farooque Khan on September 13 has made the state cabinet to take up such a step.

A historic Cabinet meeting held for the first time at Jiribam District Headquarters witnessed the decision of introduction of the new bill. The rising incidents of moral policing and mob lynching as instant punishment for crimes committed by one has created a anarchy in the northeastern state and this is a matter of worry for the state administration.

Government spokesperson Biswajit too stated the same and said that it is to check such heinous crimes that the new Bill is going to be introduced. However, there is the need to provide exemplary punishments too to the convicts for whom committing such inhumane crimes seemed to be an easy and acute way of punishing one. Hence, the police have arrested the five individuals in connection with the lynching of 26-year-old Farooque Khan at Tharoijam and remanded to judicial custody for 15 days.

The incident of mob lynching of the 26-year-old took place when some of the locals of the Tharoijam Imphal West district found him trying to steal a scooter (Honda Activa) from the garage of the accused Girani. The mob then immediately caught hold of him and beaten him to death but two of his partners fled from the situation. Although the severely injured victim was rushed to RIMS for treatment where he succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
