Mapping of Punjabi Lane currently on: Tynsong

SHILLONG, June 11: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong today said that a mapping is being carried out of the Punjabi line (Shillong) by the Directorate of land records and survey.

The focus is on the two plots of the 30,0000 square feet of land that were leased out for accommodating the Punjabi families brought by the British in the fag end of the 1800s.

“A detail survey mapping will be carried out and it is expected to be completed in a matter of ten days,” stated Tynsong, adding, “this intense task will help in finding a solution to the issue at the earliest.”

The Punjabi line located in the heart of Shillong has been the focal point of many social organizations —all demanding that the residents should be re-located at the earliest. The demands stemmed from the recent turn of events that threw part of Shillong into a virtual battle field between the stone pelters and the police.

Tynsong further stated that the government is looking at the feasibility of relocating the rightful inhabitants of the place.

However, there are also allegations that that even the rightful inhabitants of the locality have set up commercial shops, and other establishments that are not in sync with the municipal laws. And with multiple litigations in different forums, it remains to be seen as to how the government will eventually act with reference to the vexed issue.
